David grew up in Ilford, Essex. David says “swimming and water polo kept me out of trouble”. Leaving school at fifteen without qualifications David’s father arranged a job as an office boy in an insurance broker. From here he graduated to a junior broker working in ‘The Room’ at Lloyds. In 1963 David says, “I joined the police, only being accepted, I subsequently discovered, because I played league water polo.
In later years he owned pubs, restaurants and a recording studio. At times he worked
as a hotel detective and bodyguard to a Kuwaiti princess. Eventually he did ‘The Knowledge’ and became a London taxi driver, which Ihe still does part time today.
